Cosmetology

 

Program Description:

The Cosmetology program provides relevant, quality, college-articulated training in the knowledge and skills of Cosmetology.

Cosmetology I introduces students to the basic principles of orientation, cosmetology sciences, laws, properties of hair and scalp, shampooing, hairstyling and manicuring.

Cosmetology II is hands-on performances with clients in a salon setting. Students review all subject matter from the previous year. New training and skills learned include chemical texture services, haircutting, hair coloring, pedicuring and artificial nails. Through course work, lecture, lab projects, individualized projects and clinicals, students are evaluated on their knowledge of curriculum and abilities to complete entry-level skills using in the cosmetology industry. Cosmetology hours accrued in lab performance can be used toward licensure. Career-Related Skills Social skills including problem identification, social perception, and service orientation Physical skills including eye-hand coordination, finger dexterity, and standing for long periods of time Cognitive skills include active listening, critical thinking, clear communication, creativity, and time management.  Once a student completes a two-year program, he or she is expected to be able to perform practical skills such as: shampoo and scalp treatment; chemical services such as perming and coloring; hair cuts; hair styling including pin curls, finger waves, roller sets, and thermal waving; and manicures and artificial nails.

Career Outlook The salon industry grosses approximately $50 billion a year. A recent national survey shows 500,000 job openings with an average income (including tips) of $38,000. The industry offers opportunities in many career areas including:Make-up artist Stylist Educator Skin Care Specialist Hair Colorist Salon owner Nail technician/manicurist Extension/wig specialist Texture service specialist Retail specialist

 

FOR:  11th & 12th Grade Students of Palestine High School and neighboring school districts

CLASS INFO:  2 Class Periods for One Full Year during the Junior Year.  3 Class Periods for One full year during the Senior Year.

CREDITS:  Junior Year - 2  Senior Year - 3

COURSE FEE:  $225 each year
